Life after Gastric Bypass | 7 weeks out

March 24, 2007

NOTE: MY SITE IS NOW AT HTTP://BLOG.BRADGARLAND.NET, THANKS & PLEASE UPDATE!

I should first apologize about my lack of posting lately, I just haven’t been too inspired to post. Didn’t feel there was anything worth talking about. I go through that writers block mentality from time to time I’ve noticed since starting my blog. I’m always impressed at the people that can churn out post after post…some can do 5-10 posts daily. Maybe Twitter is beginning to bring my posts with any worth down since I figure I’ve kinda covered it already. Who knows…

So it’s been almost 7 full weeks now since my surgery and I do feel great. I’ve now lost around 45 pounds now since my last post a few weeks ago. I’m finally getting over the pains of the surgery and have been living a normal life again.

Foodwise, I can eat just about anything I want now. I have stayed away from breads, per the nutritionists suggestion, but other than that I’m good as long as I chew well enough. It’s been pretty easy transitioning really. I still haven’t dumped yet although, there have been a couple of times where I thought I was going to but haven’t. There have been a couple times now where something felt like it got stuck (both were leafy, spinach and salad) but I just kept drinking water afterwards and it went down eventually. I did freak out the nurses and the nutritionist the other day when I told them that I ‘tested out’ a Reese’s buttercup on my road trip back from Austin two weeks ago. For one, it didn’t bother me like I thought real sugary things would but their point was why would you even try those types of foods? I’m not really worried about, like they are, b/c I’m not even a chocolate craver/fan.

Jenny and I signed up for a membership to Lifetime Fitness and started working out FINALLY! I’ve been a few times now and have started by trying to build my cardio back up and started real lightly on the weights. The gym is great and it has everything I would ever need. I have noticed while doing exercises while laying on my stomach that it kinda hurts so I stay away from those for now, as well as any Ab work. I’m planning on going tomorrow! I am really ready to play soccer again, I’m still holding till the 3 month mark but man I love that game. Been going and watching the guys play every weekend and I’m sure that doesn’t help my desires.

Let’s see, what else? My scars are fading slowly but I think that’ll take a while.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, I need yall’s help! So I’m now getting to the point where my pants and some shirts are getting too big on me (mainly pants though). Well, I’m in a bit of a quandry…I could buy some more pants but I’m afraid those will become too big quickly and be a waste of money. Any of you long term gastric people have any suggestions? Definitely a good problem to have though…I’m not complaining.

I missed my latest two weeks pics last Wednesday but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t look that much different anyway. Maybe I should take Carrie W.’s way of doing it and just take it after every 20 pounds of weight loss or something. Although, I still have these weird thoughts/fears that I’m going to hit like 250 and just not lose anymore weight. I spent HOW MUCH for this surgery to get down to 250?!?! That would piss me off.

Anyway, for those that have written in and have expressed their support I really appreciate it. I feel like we’re in this thing together and it’s cool that my blog is bringing people together to talk about this surgery. Good luck to those that are about to have surgery, don’t be nervous…think about how great you’ll feel even shortly afterwards. It’s still crazy to me to think it was only what, 2 months ago for me?!?! 45 pounds in two months? Crazy.

Alright folks, keep commenting, keep asking questions to me and others that have been through this. We love to share our experiences on what has worked and what hasn’t.

Wow, guess I did have something to say after all. :)

  3. hi larry,
i had my surgery march 24, 2009. i have lost a total of 55 pounds so far. i am not sure if it was worth it though. i have been really frustrated. i throw up almost on a daily basis. not sure if i am advancing my diet too fast or maybe not chewing good enough, or maybe eating too fast. i have problems with nausea. i have not been tried salad yet. just now eating soft veggies. i will be glad when i can eat salads. i can eat watermelon though, which is good because i love watermelon. how are you doin now?
